Red lights: stop the car now
Temperature (thermometer or boiling fluid): driving on with rising heat can destroy a cylinder head, or the whole engine, within minutes. Pull over safely, switch off, and never open a hot radiator cap. Call a flatbed — its cost is nothing next to an engine rebuild.
Oil pressure (dripping can): oil is not reaching the engine’s moving parts. Every extra minute of running eats engine life. Stop immediately.
Battery light while driving: the alternator has likely stopped charging. The car is living off whatever remains in the battery and will die within minutes to an hour. Head somewhere safe now.
Amber lights: inspect within days, not weeks
Check Engine: the broadest light of all, from a simple sensor to injection or exhaust trouble. Steady, with the car feeling normal: book an inspection within days. Flashing: that is an active misfire destroying your catalytic converters — slow down and inspect immediately.
ABS or suspension warnings: base brakes still work, but the support systems are offline. Drive carefully; do not postpone the check.
Traction light (sliding car): flickering on a wet road means it is doing its job. Staying on for no reason means a sensor or module needs a proper read.

The difference is practical: the generic code may say “air fault” and a healthy sensor gets replaced, while the deep read finds the cracked hose that caused it.
