Describing the sound accurately covers half the diagnostic distance: when does it appear, from which corner, does it change with speed, braking, or bumps? Squeal when braking
A light squeal on the first morning stops that fades: moisture on the discs — normal. A constant squeal: usually pads at their end, or a previous set of poor-quality pads. A harsh metal-on-metal grind: the pads are gone and metal is eating the disc. Stop postponing immediately; every day multiplies the cost.
Knocks over speed bumps
The most famous sound on our roads: usually stabilizer links or control-arm bushes — small rubber parts that tire quickly here, and a comparatively simple repair. Ignoring them eats tires and stresses the rest of the suspension. On Range Rovers and Mercedes, it can also be the quiet start of an air-spring issue — physical inspection separates the two precisely.
A whine that rises with speed
A whine whose pitch follows road speed, not engine revs, points to a wheel bearing or differential. On an empty road, sway gently side to side: if the tone changes with the sway, the bearing is the prime suspect. Do not stretch this one — a collapsing bearing at highway speed is a genuine hazard.
Ticking from the engine
A light tick on cold start that fades in seconds: usually hydraulic lifters waiting for oil — monitor it. A constant tick, or one that grows with revs: possibly the start of an oil or lifter problem — inspect before it develops. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine: stop the car and call a flatbed. That is not a sound to gamble with.
